Nonpublic School Participation in Services through the Coronavirus Aide, Relief, and Economic Security


Parent Email - April 9
Dear Wildcat Family -
Today, Missouri Governor Mike Parson announced the statewide cancellation of in-person classes for all K-12 schools.  He stated, “This recommendation was made by working together with the Missouri Department of Education and several school superintendents from across the state -- urban & rural districts. Schools should continue remote learning for their students until the end date previously set on their academic calendars."

We will continue to move forward with our Learning from Home plans and will now begin to finalize some additional plans as it relates to end-of-the-year events and activities.  As soon as decisions have been made, we will get that information to you.

Here’s What We Know:

  • Our “To Go” meal program will continue to operate as it has been since March 23rd.  For more information, visit our website -
  • Learning from Home activities will continue as planned.

Here’s What We Don’t Know … Yet:

  • Class of 2020: No decisions have been made about graduation, senior awards, cap and gown distribution, etc. at this point; we simply do not have those answers. We must follow all directives, including social distancing guidelines and stay-at-home orders from our local, state, and federal government officials.

Parent Email - April 2
Wildcat Family -
As we head into week #3 of our closure, we are going to transition from review and enrichment to some new material and a bit more structure.  Teachers will be posting a week’s worth of material by Monday. This will allow students and families to set their schedule for the week. Also, all classes will be doing the same work - for example, all sixth grade math will all be doing the same things even if they have different teachers.  Again, we hope this helps make it easier on our families.

For students enrolled in Cass Career Center classes, teachers will be sending material directly to the students.

Here’s a brief tutorial created for first grade families, but that is helpful for all using the Learning from Home sites -

A couple of Q&As...
How much time are students expected to work each day? 
Recommended time for each grade span:

  • Pre-K : 30 minutes
  • Grades K-1: 45 minutes
  • Grades 2-3: 60 minutes
  • Grades 4-5: 90 minutes
  • Grades 6-12: 30 minutes per teacher (3 hours max in a day)

What will grades look like?
Elementary students will not receive grades during school closure.  As of right now all third quarter grades will be duplicated for fourth quarter.  

For middle and high school, students can IMPROVE grades that were given BEFORE the closure.  No grades will be given on new material. Teachers are encouraged to present new material and provide feedback to students on their learning. We are focusing on LEARNING rather than GRADING.  

HHS and CCC dual credit and AP classes will follow the guidelines from the colleges and the Advanced Placement program. Teachers will provide you with specific information as it relates to your course.  Students should check email regularly.

All our students and families are in different situations as far as learning from home - some are sharing computers, some have unreliable internet, some older students are taking care of their younger siblings, etc.  We want to continue our students’ learning momentum as best as possible based on individual circumstances.

If internet access is a concern, we do have wifi access in the parking lots and driveways near our buildings.  Maps to the best place to access that wifi can be viewed here -  

To log into the wifi, you will first have to go to (if it doesn’t pop up).  If your HMS or HHS student doesn’t remember his/her login on his/her Chromebook or if you’re using your own device, the guest password is hv and the password is wildcats.2020.

You can go to those points, connect to wifi and access documents, videos, and resources from the Google sites.

We encourage you to reach out to teachers with your questions.  You can email or call and leave a message on their school extension (teachers can access school voicemail from home).  Here’s a list of emails & extensions  The main number for each building is as follows:

And one final reminder, our To Go Meal program will continue throughout the closure.  It is FREE to ALL children under the age of 18. Parent Email - March 23

Wildcat Family -

As the number of cases of coronavirus increases, many states and cities are extending stay-at-home guidelines and precautions to help prevent and slow the spread of the disease.

Consistent with today’s stay-at-home order issued by Cass County, we are extending our school closure through April 24.  This also falls in line with Kansas City area school districts’ plans and continues to make the safety & health of our families the top priority.  To read the full Cass County order, visit this link -

Our plan for providing resources, links, activities, and ideas to help continue learning from home will continue through April 3.  Again, these are review and enrichment opportunities. As we near April 3, we will provide more information on how school will look through April 24.

Meal pick-ups will continue as this is considered an essential service.  However, meal deliveries will not continue. If you were on the meal delivery list, you will get meals delivered tomorrow which will include items for the remainder of the week.  You will then need to make arrangements for pick-up beginning Monday, March 30 at one of the sites.

Parent Email - March 20

Wildcat Family -

We wanted to provide you with a few updates as we head into our post-spring break closure.  

First, the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education announced yesterday that they are cancelling all statewide testing this year - MAP and End-of-Course exams.  This is good news as this was a stress that our students and staff did not need in this uncertain time.

Second, the Governor of Missouri announced the postponement of the April 7 election to June 2.  This means that Propositions I+N and school board candidate elections will not happen until that time.

We have over 270 children signed up for our “to go” meal program which will begin on Monday. If you did not get your child signed up, but would like to participate, please complete the form at this link -  Since the initial deadline has passed, please do not plan to get meals until Tuesday so that we can plan for additional meals. This will be set up as a drive-thru service.  Please stay in your car and follow the directions/cones/volunteers to pick up your meals.

Next week, your child’s teacher(s) will begin providing resources, links, activities, and ideas to help continue learning from home.  The initial contact will be made via email then teachers will provide information on where/how to access ongoing communication and information.  If you have an HMS or HHS student, please encourage him/her to check email regularly beginning Monday. All staff will be accessible by email and will be checking regularly.  For a list of staff emails, please refer to our Staff Directory on the website -

To provide a bit of fun, we’ll have a virtual spirit week next week.  Days will be as follows:

Monday - Maker Monday - Fort Building - build a fort with blankets, legos/blocks, on Minecraft, 

Tuesday - Tuesday Tales - spend time with a good book

Wednesday - Wildcat Why Wednesday - wear your blue & white or Wildcat gear & share why you like being a Wildcat (use a piece of paper & hold it in your picture)

Thursday - Creative Cats Day- explore your creative side with writing, drawing, dancing, music, etc.

Friday - Family Fun Friday - enjoy a game, reading, or outdoor activity with your family

For each of these days, take a picture and submit to or message the photo to the district Facebook page -  Only one photo per child, please.  We will post all submissions in a daily photo album on Facebook.

And finally a few tips for parents as we work through this together…

  • Do not attempt to fill your child’s day with “school work.” Use this as a guide for maximum time….
    • For elementary, 1-2 hours/day; for middle school 2-3; and for high school, 3-4
    • Include reading time in your day
  • Learning doesn’t have to occur on a computer or project - think about things you do every day and have your child join you - laundry, cooking, talk about your job, etc.
  • Make time to go outside - fresh air & movement will do everyone some good
  • Some children need structure (set times for activities); others do not - please do what’s best for your child.
  • And remember, please reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions - we’re all in this together and we’re here to help in whatever ways we can.

Parent Email - March 16

Wildcat Family-

To help ensure the health, safety, and well-being of our students and staff, and to do our part in trying to mitigate the spread of Coronavirus, Harrisonville Schools will join schools across the Kansas City area in extending closure beyond spring break through Friday, April 3.

This evening, the Cooperating School Districts of Greater Kansas City - which we are a part of - announced this coordinated effort.  Read the full release here -

This closure affects all programming at our schools, including before- and after-school activities, all athletic and extracurricular practices and competitions, weekend events, and all facility use by outside groups.

We understand that extended school closure will create hardship for many of our families. Please know that we are doing our very best to make decisions that will help care for all of our students, teachers, staff members, families, and communities through this time. As we have noted previously, this is a fluid situation with frequent changes and updates.

Over the next few days, we will communicate our plan to support families during this unprecedented health crisis, which include:

  • Providing meals for those who count on our food service program
  • Maintaining learning momentum to the greatest extent possible, given the circumstances


We will be sending frequent updates with information and resources via email, text messages, our website, and social media channels. 

Additionally today, the Cass County Public Library announced closure through April 5 and the Harrisonville Community Center will close on Wednesday, March 18 through March 29.  Also the ACT organization canceled its April 4 test - those registered should be receiving an email regarding rescheduling.

We are so grateful for your patience and understanding as we continue to work through this difficult situation. We will get through this challenge together.

Parent Email - March 13

Dear Parents, 

As we head into spring break, we wanted to assure you that we are continuing to monitor the latest updates regarding Coronavirus.  If any updates are needed over the break, we will use the same channels we use to communicate inclement weather closures - email, phone call, text, and website.

It is important for us to prepare for the unknown and plan for possible impacts on school and the learning process. If it becomes necessary to close school, the length of the closure will impact our next steps. We are preparing to provide virtual learning opportunities for students in grades 6-12 and education material for our students at the kindergarten and elementary level in the event that school closings are enacted. We do not have any indication that virtual instruction will be needed in the near future, but we want families to be aware of the possibility. 

Any school closing decisions will come from the county or state health departments.

Today, we are sending home Chromebooks with students in grades 6-8, who indicated in a previous survey that they do not have access to a device at home.

For elementary students, we have created a Bingo game that could provide some fun and learning opportunities over break. It will come home in backpacks.  We hope that as you and your student accomplish “bingos,” you will celebrate as a family. Students can bring back the Bingo board after break for a special treat.

Should school closings occur beyond spring break, we will be in contact with you regarding opportunities to continue your student’s learning.

Parent Email - March 12

Dear Wildcat Family,

As stated in our email last week, we continue regular communication with the Cass County Health Department and the Missouri Department of Health & Senior Services as we follow their guidance in regard to coronavirus.  We are also closely monitoring information sent from the CDC. This is a very fluid situation and we will do our best to keep you updated. 

The CDC has issued multiple travel advisories for trips to specified countries outside the United States and just last night expanded this to Europe. As we approach spring break, we wanted to share our plan with you.  All staff and students visiting countries under travel advisories with the CDC from now until further notice, are being asked to stay home from school for 14 days upon their return to the country. During these 14 days, students will not be penalized. If your student or family members in your household have recently traveled or are traveling to China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, or Europe, or on a cruise, please inform your student’s school administrator. The CDC’s guidance is that they will stay home for 14 days (the incubation period) from the time the person(s) in their household left the level 3 area  

The Harrisonville School District continues to work with and take guidance from the Cass County Health Department, DHSS and CDC. We must all work together and take personal responsibility for the decisions we make as individuals and for our families. The CDC is providing regular information for schools and families. We will continue to be diligent in the cleaning of our schools and with diligent hand washing.

As we’ve communicated, the District continues to use regular cleaning methods as well as additional deep cleaning disinfection efforts in all schools, district facilities and on buses. 

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services has created a COVID-19 (coronavirus) hotline to answer questions from the public. The number is 877-435-8411. This number can be reached 24 hours a day, seven days a week and is being operated by medical professionals.

It is not our intent to raise the level of concern regarding the coronavirus or any illness, but rather inform families that we are preparing for all possibilities.  The safety of our students and staff is our number one priority. 

Please be assured that if we learn of a confirmed or presumptive case in our community, we will inform staff, students and families. We appreciate all you are doing to help keep our Harrisonville Wildcat Family healthy.

Parent Email - March 5

Cold, flu & strep season has been in full swing for several weeks; we have seen an increased number of students and staff with symptoms of influenza and other winter illnesses. In addition, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued recent advisories related to the coronavirus.

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses and can cause mild to severe illness. Symptoms of influenza can vary, but generally include a high fever, headache, chills, body aches, sore throat and cough.

The flu season has been complicated by recent reports of a new coronavirus (COVID-19). Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses with common symptoms similar to the flu, which include a fever, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing. There are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Missouri. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) has established a website, which also links to information from the CDC, for those seeking more information about this new coronavirus.  Here’s that link -

When a new disease is circulating, it’s natural for people to ask what they can do to protect themselves and their families. The best guidance is to take the same precautions recommended during flu season. We urge all families to continue the practice of maintaining healthy behaviors, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available;
  • Cover nose and mouth with a sleeve or a tissue when coughing or sneezing;
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth to prevent the spread of germs; 
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick; 
  • Stay home from school and work when you are sick (students must be fever free for 24 hours before returning to school).

Our school nurses continue to monitor illness in our schools on a regular basis, including symptoms and absences of students and staff. The district’s maintenance and custodial staff continues their diligent efforts in cleaning to ensure the safety and health of all students and staff.
