2018-2019 Back to School Information
Our new school year is coming up fast! School starts on August 16th. We have new start and end times this year. We will now start school at 7:58. Your student can enter the building beginning at 7:20. Please do NOT drop your students off or let them arrive to school earlier than 7:20. There is not adequate supervision for your student before this time. School dismisses at 3:00 p.m. The north doors (entrance on Finney St. side) are for 6th grade drop off and pick up. The main entrance to the school is for 7th and 8th grade drop off and pick up. No student should be dropped off or picked up at the back of the school. This area is reserved for busses only. Bike riders and walkers should come in and out of the main doors only. If you pick your student up from school, please adhere to the map provided. Sixth grade parents picking up their students after school should approach the building from the east on Finney St. (off of Eastwood). Then line up in the gravel parking lot just north of Finney and along Finney heading west. Sixth grade students will exit HMS, cross Finney and load into cars. Parents will then turn right out of the parking lot to Highland and turn right on Highland to Mechanic. Seventh and Eighth grade parents picking up after school will come around the circle drive at the front of the building and exit by taking a left on Highland. No one should be turning right in front of the school. All traffic needs to head away from the 3-way stop at Washington and Highland; this area is very busy with our student walkers and bike riders and should be avoided by cars.
Please remember to take a look at Parent Portal before school starts and update all of your information. It is extremely important that we have accurate phone numbers, emails and emergency contact information. This is our go-to for contacting you. If the information isn’t accurate we can not provide you with the most up to date information and we must have correct information to contact you in the event of an emergency situation with the building and/or your student.
Residency verification night is August 2nd from 3:30-7:30. If you have not already provided us information to verify your address you will need to do so at this time. Parent portal opens July 30th for access to your student’s schedule. Access to your student’s schedule through the portal does NOT guarantee their starting school the first day, you must provide residency proof before they can attend.
Another change we have made at HMS involves our class periods. We now have 8 class periods a day. The new class period is during 6th hour. All students will have a 30 minute period each day which will extend from student enrichment to student intervention. The area your student will be involved in for 3 week periods will stem from teacher placement and student needs.
We also changed our lunch shifts. Instead of the whole 6th grade, 7th grade and 8th grade eating lunch at the same time, we have broken the shifts down into TEAMs. So, A-Team will eat first, then Rookies and so on. This will give us more space in the lunch room and shorter lines. Bell schedule and lunch shifts are listed below.
Meet the Teacher night for all HMS students is August 14th from 6:00-7:30 p.m.
Please remember to bring your schedule with you to Meet the Teacher night. We understand that supplies can be overwhelming to bring on the first day of school so your child may bring their supplies with them on Meet the Teacher night to place in their lockers. All lockers have already been assigned and are on your student’s class schedule. Supply list is attached to this email and can be found on the school website.
Picture day is August 24th. All students will be photographed for the yearbook at this time. We will send home pictures packets around August 20th. You can also order online through Pearce Photography.
Volleyball tryouts for 7th and 8th grade will be held on August 16th - 17th. Tryouts will be from 3:15 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Be sure to have a physical on file with the district by the morning of August 16th. Physical forms can be found in the HMS office or on our school website. 6th Grade Parents - your student's bus route/numbers will change from his/her elementary bus route/number. Please be sure you talk with our bus company prior to the start of school. Representatives from the bus company will be at Residency on Thursday or you can call the bus barn at 380-2028.
Students will receive a hard copy of our student handbook when school starts. The handbook is attached. Feel free to read through it and sign off on the last page that you and your student have read over it. You can bring this sheet to Residency night or Meet the Teacher night or your student will receive one when school starts for you to sign off on.
Medical form is also attached and needs to be filled out and turned in. Each student needs a new form each school year.
