McEowen Monthly October 1, 2008 I hope you and your family had a terrific September. At McEowen it has been an awesome start to the new school year. I appreciate everyone's patience and efforts as we wrapped up construction and got McEowen ready for the school year. Our building looks wonderful; come in for a tour if you haven't seen all the changes. We thank everyone for your support on the recent bond issue that allowed these changes at McEowen to be possible. Just a reminder that there is a three way stop sign where the car rider loop meets the State School Road just north of McEowen, traffic does not stop coming down James Street. We really appreciate you going slow and communicating with the buses when both vehicles are stopped. It has been working out safely for our students. MAP scores were mailed out recently, if you have questions about your child's results from last year's MAP tests don't hesitate to call Mrs. Holden or myself. The results can be confusing. Remember that the MAP tests are a snap shot of how your child did during a two week testing window. There are many variables that go into the overall academic picture of your child; MAP scores are one of them. If you have questions or comments don't hesitate to call the school or email me at erholtzd@harrisonvilleschools.k12.mo.us . Have a great fall!

Thursday Night Library Schedule 6:00p.m.-8:00p.m. October 16 October 23 October 30 Give the Gift That Keeps on Giving The Library Birthday Book Club is now open for membership. Joining the Birthday Book Club is a way in which the students of McEowen can give a gift that keeps on giving. The students of McEowen can buy a book for the Library Media Center as a special celebration of his or her birthday or special day. To participate the students should bring seven dollars to the library media center, where they will choose a book to purchase for the library. The students' name will appear in the McEowen Newsletter, and he or she will be invited to the Library Book Club Party held in the library in May.
Counselor's Corner The school year is off and running…we're already at mid-quarter! Counseling classes are off to a great start with a lesson on Personal Motivation. Each class has its own poster outlining 10 strategies to get motivated and continue to be motivated. In the words of Zig Ziglar, an accomplished motivational speaker, “ People often say that motivation doesn't last. Well, neither does bathing…that's why we recommend it daily.” Students are encouraged to pick one of the strategies and think of it in the morning as they are getting ready for school. Character Education focused on RESPECT for September and is focusing on RESPONSIBILITY for October. Because of the late start for school this year, we have held off having our first Positive Action Assembly until October 29 th at 2:30. We will be starting our Career Portfolios both in fourth and fifth grade during the next few weeks. Our first Career Day is October 13 th and will focus on the Business Path. If you have a job that you would like to share with our students by participating in a Career Day, please leave me a message at X4250. Fifth Grade students that applied for jobs around the school received their job placements this week. One hundred and fifty six students applied for and received jobs. It is exciting to see such enthusiastic participation and willingness to help out around McEowen. Fourth Grade students will be hearing about the Kiwanis Terrific Kid program at the end of October and will have their first chance to participate in this awesome goal-setting program. Lastly, all McEowen students are taking an informal Learning Style inventory in Counseling classes right now. Ask your student about their learning style and look for them to bring home a guide to how to study best based on your learning style. Thank you for sharing your children with us this year. We hope that it is their BEST year yet. Please let me know if there is ever anything I can help you with…we are all on the same side…the KIDS'! J
SchoolReach The district will once again be using the SchoolReach automated calling system to provide timely information to parents. The system will be used for general calendar and event reminders, as well as for emergencies such as snow days. General calls and snow day calls will be made to the home phone number we have on file in our Student Information System. Emergency calls during the school day will go to home and cell phone numbers. If you have a change in phone number, please contact your child's school. Below are some additional reminders that may be helpful. Caller ID: The Caller ID will display the main number for each building. Live Answers: There is a short pause at the beginning of the message, usually just a few seconds. Call recipients should answer the phone as normal with “Hello” and hold for the message to begin. Multiple “Hello's” will delay the message . Answering Machines: The system will detect that a machine has answered and will play the recording to the machine. The maximum number of rings before hang up is 5. Answering machines should be set to pick up after four rings or less or the message may be missed. Message Repeat: At the end of the message the listener will be prompted to ‘press one' to hear the message again. This is very effective when a child answers the phone and hands it to a parent, who can then ‘Repeat' the message in its entirety. False Detection: There are several possible reasons that the system could falsely assume a machine pick-up versus a live answer. They include loud background noise, cordless phone with static or other interference, not saying hello, saying hello more than one time or delaying saying hello. Art in Our Community Key News
